Dorms Food Choices: Making Healthy Choices

The most frequent food in my dorm contains instant ramen. However, it does not make me feel good about myself. Here are some suggestions and recipes to help you make better choices even if you’re only in your dorm!

Roasted Vegetables

I LOVE VEGETABLES

The idea of eating vegetables is my biggest challenge. I’m not a huge fan of frozen or canned vegetables, but sprucing them in the dorms and discovering ways to integrate them into your daily meals isn’t difficult.

Frozen vegetables: You can cook frozen vegetables in the microwave! Put a few drops of water into your bowl and steam them, or mix them into a bowl and sprinkle them with some spices! The best tip I can offer for frozen vegetables is to purchase tiny containers with spices you can sprinkle on the vegetables. They’re quick and straightforward to keep in a dorm room!

Canned Veggies: To can vegetables, pour them into a dish, wash them, drain the juice or water and include them in your bowl of ramen! Corn is prevalent in the ramen world, so adding it to your bowl with the seasoning that comes with it can not only spice up your ramen but also improve its health!

WHAT CAN I DO FOR MY MEALS IN THE DINING HALLS?

Do you remember the times when the dining hall serves dry chicken and a variety of vegetables that are questionable that you want to have dinner in your dorm? Two recipes I use in these situations!

Chicken, Rice and Veggies Rice that is microwaveable is the best choice. It doesn’t matter if you prefer plain or flavoured. You can pair it with pre-cooked chicken bites (Costco offers large packs of these). Incorporating these with the tips for vegetables from the previous post makes for the fantastic food that’s delicious and fast!

Quesadillas: The recipe could be altered to suit your preferences, but here is how I prepare mine! Use a tortilla, including shredded cheese or cooked chicken bites, Guacamole (because who doesn’t have avocados in their dorm room? ), canned diced tomatoes and chopped tomato chillies or other vegetables you have in your fridge. Put it in your microwave to make the cheese melt, and you’ll get a delicious, nutritious quesadilla. Sprinkle some lettuce or rice on top to roll it rather than folding it up, and you’ve made a nutritious wrap!

MY DORM IS TOO TIRING, AND I DON’T HAVE TIME TO MAKE MEALS

Sandwich

I know that only some have enough time or energy to cook food, particularly in college. Here are some things I think about while dining out to help me make better decisions!

Are you gluten-free? I have noticed that eating gluten-free makes me feel happier about myself, and I generally don’t feel as bloated and disgusted after eating!

Does there appear to be a vegetable in this? I’d love to eat mac and cheese at Panera daily However, making choices based on vegetables is more nutritious and healthier. If you prefer the macaroni and cheese made with broccoli or any soup could be a good alternative!

What choices have I made this week? If you’re sure you made healthier and better choices during the week, be aware that indulging is acceptable! Don’t guilt yourself for wanting to eat a burger instead of a salad. The way you nourish your body is the most crucial step in the process of choosing healthier options!
